She really must have impressed because she turned that one episode into starring in Whedon's upcoming hit TV series, Firefly. Summer Glau's River Tam character was complex and Glau dealt with it well. Tam in the film, as her character from the film was known, was subjected to tests by the government that were intended to make her the ideal assassin. Tam had difficulty learning to control her emotions as a result. Glau demonstrated her fighting abilities as well as acting abilities in Firefly. It was also evident that training to become an assassin enabled Glau to fully use her athletic abilities. Summer Glau was classically-trained as dancer. She also has the study of flamenco and tango however it was her broken toe which ended her dance career. Firefly was only on for only one season but the show gained an avid fan following. Whedon was so enthralled by it that he returned to the show a few years afterwards. In the meantime though, Summer Glau continued to be a star in a variety of shows. Summer Glau appeared on television shows including Cold Case, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
